There are multiple ways to update the player’s OS as well as several customization options.&#x20;

:::hint{type="info"}
If you have trouble updating the OS, make sure your microSD card is formatted for FAT32 or try a different microSD card. If you are copying the OS to your player manually, make sure the update file is in the root folder of the microSD card (not a sub-directory) and that the file name ends with \*-update.bsfw.
:::

# Using BrightSign Control

1. Sign into your network at *https\://control.bsn.cloud/*.&#x20;
2. Go to **Schedule** and select the player(s) you would like to update.&#x20;
3. Go to **Choose** **Action** and select **OS Update**.
4. Pick your desired OS version. You can schedule the action for a future time or start the job immediately, and/or select **Compatibility Check&#x20;**&#x74;o make sure that version can run on your player.
5. Select **Review**.&#x20;
6. Enter a name for the job if you prefer, then select **Start** **Job**. The player operating system(s) will update at the time you selected.

## Remote DWS

The [Remote Diagnostic Web Server](docId:6zVEBQJF7-9aGT11u3eqw) (RDWS) can be used to update the player's OS.

::::WorkflowBlock
:::WorkflowBlockItem
Access the RDWS by going to the **Network** tab and clicking on the gear icon next to the player.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Click on the **Advanced&#xA0;**&#x74;ab.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
In **BrightSignOS Update > Update Options&#xA0;**&#x73;elect your desired OS option and click **Update**. This will update the OS on the player. As part of this process, the player will reboot.

# Manual Update

To update the OS manually, follow these steps:

::::WorkflowBlock
:::WorkflowBlockItem
Power down your player.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Go the the [Software Downloads page](https://www.brightsign.biz/downloads/overview), select your player model (the OS is dependent on the player model), and download the .zip file.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Unzipping the .zip file will result in a *.bsfw* file. Copy the *.bsfw* file to the root directory of a microSD card or USB stick. This must be the only file in that directory with a *.bsfw* extension.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Insert the microSD card or USB stick into the player.&#x20;
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Power on the player. The player will automatically upgrade itself, remove the file from the microSD card, and reboot with the new OS version.
:::
::::

# Rescue Mode (Safe Mode / Secure Boot)

:::hint{type="warning"}
These instructions are not applicable to LGUV5N players. See [this page](docId\:FlxzCFgWr98P1UrALtpCE) for those instructions.
:::

If the OS update process was prematurely interrupted or if the OS file has been corrupted, you may not be able to update the OS on a player using the above methods. In these cases, you can perform an update using **rescue mode**:

::::WorkflowBlock
:::WorkflowBlockItem
Copy the *.bsfw* update file onto the root directory of the microSD card.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Power down the player.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Insert the card into the player.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Press and hold the SVC button.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Power on the player while holding the SVC button.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Hold the SVC button until the Pwr LED begins to flash. On older models, the Upd LED will turn on instead.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Release the SVC button.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Allow several minutes for the OS update to complete.
:::

:::WorkflowBlockItem
Once finished, the player should reboot and display the BrightSign logo, along with the new OS version of the player.
:::
::::

:::hint{type="warning"}
The rescue mode process does not work with BrightSignOS version 6.2.94 on exFAT formatted cards. To perform rescue mode with 6.2.94, format the card using FAT32.
:::

## Customizing an OS Update

By default, the *.bsfw* update file will delete itself from the local storage once the OS update is complete and the player reboots, but you can append text to the name of the file to change the default behavior. This only works if you are updating the OS using local storage (a microSD card or USB drive)*.*

| **Text to Append** | **Behavior**                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  | **Example**<br />(Update.bsfw is the default) |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| \_save.bsfw        | The update file will not be deleted after the update is applied. The player will not automatically reboot after applying the update until the storage device containing the update file is removed. | Update\_save.bsfw |
| \_newer.bsfw | The update will only be applied if the OS file is newer than the installed player OS. The file will not be deleted after the update process is done. If the player is booting up in [Safe Mode](https://support.brightsign.biz/hc/en-us/articles/218066197-Updating-FW-using-Secure-Boot-Safe-Mode-), the OS update will always be applied because the OS version of the player cannot be checked beforehand. | Update\_newer.bsfw |
| \_different.bsfw | The update will only be applied if the version of the update file does not match the current OS version of the player. The file is not deleted after the update process is completed. | Update\_different.bsfw |

# Viewing the Current OS Version

There are two ways to view the player OS (firmware) version in BrightSign Author:&#x20;

- Open the [Diagnostic Web Server (DWS)](docId\:qXt4YHey7IEj_M9dH73wM) for your player. The **Info** tab shows the BrightSignOS Version for that player.&#x20;
- You can view the current BOS version in the **Network** tab by displaying the **OS Version** table column:&#x20;

![](https://api.archbee.com/api/optimize/yNZmRf_toJKk2FFzpGtyJ/fFDjjzbalIYNh_nYR-NIy_image.png)

If you are not using BrightSign Author, you can power on the player while it is connected to a monitor with no microSD card or other storage device inserted. The OS version number will be displayed on screen once the boot process has completed.
